Melbourne claims itself as Australia’s best city for foodies and hipsters, and even the cultural capital of Australia. And we must say, the city has a great alternative and cultural vibe, amazing restaurants (some of the best vegan restaurant you could actually dream of). It doesn’t have the wow effect of Sydney but once you have started exploring the city, you will fall in love with it for good.
Melbourne is a city you need to explore by foot, wandering in the alternative neighborhoods such as Brunswick or Fitzroy. That’s also where you will find among the city’s best street art which has nothing to envy to Berlin! In terms of gay scene, Melbourne has nothing to envy to its main competitor: Sydney. Local gay bars and gay clubs host fantastic parties where you can dance the night out! Melbourne has also a very descent scene of local gay saunas, or cruise clubs for a city it’s size, and you probably won’t have the time to explore them all! Most of them are located in Collingwood, on the northern side of the Yara river. But you also have an alternative gay neighborhood, in the southern side of the river, around Prahran. Both are worth exploring and the second one will be the perfect party option after a day at the beach in St Kilda. In terms of gay event, you shouldn’t miss the Midsumma festival end of January, when the city is celebrating the local gay pride. The city hosts many events and great parties, and the heart of it is in Alexandra Gardens, close to the Melbourne CBD.
